History Of Bluegrass
Do you agree that the blues is the original American art form?

Note that the sadness is not rooted in any direct way African music or any other European music. It is the foundation of all forms of American music that followed: rock, jazz, country and bluegrass, even. It was also common early in the history of this country – some historians say that became common as early as late 1700. Do you agree Blues is the original – and some would say the only – truly American art form?

I agree with you on one point. Always bothered me that the Jazz is consistently called the only truly American art form of music, as that title would be more appropriate given the Blues. That said, there are some fatal errors of attribution even that. As the first poster suggests, the original American music came from the Native Americans long before the slaves were never to these shores. Moreover, while his statement about blues is the foundation for rock, jazz, etc. is correct, the relationship between blues and country is much more complex. Both forms developed while symbiotically. Own country, can also boast of being the original (despite Indian music) music American. While the blues came from African sources with European influences, the country emerged from European sources (especially English, Scottish and Irish folk music) combined with African influences. Finally, the premise that the blues can not be attributed directly to any African form is totally wrong. West African music, particularly Griot and Jeli singers, are often indistinguishable from blues, early music, with the exception of the tongue. Check out some of the research made by people like Sam Charters, Paul Oliver (and recording assistant) for large examples.
