In recent years we have seen a huge increase in the sophistication and power of the terrorists. The bomb that destroyed the USS Cole in 2000 was child's play compared with the sophistication of the foiled London-based al Qaeda attack on the airlines and the month along formidable military-style attack on Israel by Hezbollah. It is increasingly clear that the complexity and enormity of 9 / 11 was a "trend setter" instead of "luck" fluke.
Why is terrorism up the ladder of sophistication and proliferation rather than down?
The problem, I think, is that we are achieving the "graduates" rather than their mentors. Thus for all the known terrorists, there are probably a hundred pups waiting for action.
Unless you re-evaluate our definition of "accomplice to a crime," our struggle against terrorism may soon resemble flies with a gun shot.
"Accessory to a crime" has been traditionally limited to those involved in the planning and the immediate execution of a crime. The mentality of a terrorist, however, is rarely sudden, spontaneous act. It is usually the result of a conditioning process that is promoted and nurtured by close associations in the schools, religious institutions, neighborhoods, etc.
It may seem counter to everything we believe in a western society about freedom of speech and religion to prosecute people who only have inspired others with words. But if we fail to grasp the idea that someone who inspires others with a certain insanity that causes them later to commit mass murder is as much a part of the terrorist acts as they put on the suicide jackets, we are in for a rude awakening. While the capture of terrorists who are here and there, one at a time, were being "mass produced" worldwide.
We must begin to go after those who encourage terrorism or terrorist groups with the support of inspiration. N sergeant has the "free speech" to inspire his men to go AWOL, students do not have "free speech" in a classroom (for reasons far less severe than life and death situations) does not even have "freedom of expression "in a theater, and the list goes on and on. It seems that restrict freedom of expression in certain circumstances, is quite acceptable and not a violation of any constitutional rights.
Moreover, if you train a dog, even with mere words, to be a vicious murderer, and killing can be considered legally liable. Why is that when you verbally inspire a human being to become a vicious murderer and killer, which is responsible for holding a constitutional issue freedom of expression?
Our interpretations of many constitutional principles are biased and arbitrary. We need to put these laws in favor of law-abiding citizens and put them out of the hands of the promoters of terrorism and civil liberties incredibly convoluted that sometimes seem more concerned about the "freedoms" than life itself.
If you can tell people not to speak in a theater because it disturbs others or maybe someone in jail in contempt of court "for exercise their "free speech" when a judge told him not to talk, you can certainly people in jail for saying things that inspire others to commit mass murder.
The notion that if we start to restrict these rights, which eventually will cut other civil liberties, is pure rubbish. The restrictions just proclaimed, and many others I'm sure you can think, have not led us into a totalitarian society. Drastic measures against promoters of terrorism and we hatemonger become less of a democracy.
Freezing of the money supply of a terrorist organization is not enough. Those involved in collecting and even contribution, if you can prove that he knew where the money should be incarcerated.
Religious leaders or organizers of the march to vomit hatred which has been shown to result in the killing, although it was not in a particular case must be stopped. This is not free speech or freedom of religion. This is pure incitement to commit murder.
This is where some people tend to quote Benjamin Franklin: "Any society that would give some leeway to gain a little security deserve neither and lose both. "There is nothing" little "about the security we are trying to win. After killing thousands of innocent people and wreaked havoc on our economy, terrorism has already taken some of our freedom and has endangered our security. This is a fight for survival, the likes of Benjamin Franklin he never knew.
If we begin to take on farms of terrorism, may soon face the terrorists in numbers unprecedented and overwhelming. And that certainly does not make us a freer society.
