Car emergency lights can come in a surprisingly wide range of colors, shapes and styles. Generally, such lighting is used for signal traffic around an emergency situation is underway, or perhaps a matter of a lower degree of caution notice announcing the transfer vehicle the right of way. Independent contractors such as roofing, electricians, and security guards benefit from the use of emergency lighting in appropriate situations. The number of local emergency personnel volunteers has also increased, creating more of a necessity of using proper application of emergency vehicle lights. Laws vary from state to state as to what colors are permitted for civilian use, so research your local codes for of colors allowed. The following classifications apply to the United States.

Color Code Description

Red is the best known of all emergency light colors. Moving towards the red light more often reserved for police and firefighters, but may also be used in certain states of hearses.

The blue lights are often reserved for law enforcement in most states, but the tow truck and EMTs legally can use this color as well. Many Western states are also allowed to use blue lights on snow removal.
Amber / yellow lights are traditionally used for construction vehicles or tow trucks, which indicates a vehicle is going slower than traffic flow. This color is one of the most common colors used for emergency purposes, but it may also signal danger, such as a downed power line.

Green is a less common color of the warning light. Green can mean a command vehicle, a fire chief's car. Paramedics and volunteer firefighters often use color green, as if the other colors in a given state (such as blue) are reserved. Green can also connote a HAZMAT vehicle.

White lights are often used as "side" lights in combination with the colors of emergency. School buses in some states are obliged to use a beacon of white light when stop and pick up passengers. White also used as headlights, accompanied by red for medical emergency vehicles.

Emergency Light Types

Lights of emergency vehicles as they come in many varieties as do the colors. Perhaps the most familiar form is the red and blue light bar " strobe light police. Lightbars can also be used in emergency vehicles and service vehicles such as cranes or electric utility. Trailer trucks often run red side light, while electric utility trucks will run amber or yellow. Small sidebar Interior lights can also be mounted by "undercover work" by the police. Mounted on the dashboard lights are completely invisible to traffic until activated. Lightbars LEDs are more expensive than their halogen counterparts, but are also more efficient. One popular trend in law enforcement is secret place a small LED light bar on the peak, which is off the road, but very visible when activated.

Lighthouses have a casing with cylindrical with an inner light that turns slowly. They have fallen out of fashion in the application of the law, being replaced by the ubiquitous strobe light bar red and blue. Headlights often seen today as most old-fashioned, is identified with 50's TV police dramas was. Some police departments but still use them as a matter of pride and tradition, an example is the Michigan State Police. Volunteer fire departments and the security services often used magnetic mounted beacons of light where you can put on the roof of a car to notify traffic, and then put away when not needed. This is often called the "Kojak" light, name of the 70s TV character's private detectives.

All emergency lighting often has dramatic connotations, as in the "Kojak" example above. However, emergency lights have a serious purpose and are designed for an essential function to quickly communicate critical, position sensitive time. In the era of text messages, Twitters and cell phones, no other form of communication on the effectiveness of emergency or illumination assistant when there is no need to report promptly surrounding traffic.

Western Snow Plows
Road conditions in cold climates?

I'm thinking about attending college in western New York State, by the Finger Lakes. However, I worry be locked up there in the winter due to snow. No regions that receive a large amount of snow each year to adequately plow the roads, or impossible move from October to May?

I lived in Saratoga Springs, a winter several years ago and found that they take care of the roads as soon as you can reach it. This will be plowing snow and salting the roads to melt ice. But when the snow or ice storm is happening, it is very difficult to keep above it until it slows down or stops. The worst thing I had to deal with is on the roads after first winter ice storm, where there are approximately eyes half-inch of ice on the road and have not the first application of salt so far. Otherwise, I found that the plows were there more or less during and immediately after snowstorms to keep the roads clear. And, apart from having to drive much slower, when there was still ice and snow on roads, I was really surprised how well I could avoid the winter.
